Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Simply put, a shell and tube heat exchanger is used to cool fluids on a large scale, such as in an oil refinery. The device consists of a pressure shell that contains tubes. Fluid is directed around the tubes using baffles.

To function, two fluids of different temperatures are fed into the exchanger. One flows through the tubes and the other flows outside the pressure shell. As the second fluid passes over the tubes the heat of the two liquids are exchanged. Tubes come in one-pass and two-pass forms.

Adventures in Faucet Repair

When it rains it pours! While readying the guest bathroom for an overnight visitor, the faucet handle came right off. I’m pretty handy with a set of tools, so I went about disassembling the handle and unscrewing the back plate to take a look at the cartridge. Unfortunately, everything in our apartment is so old that the cartridge was lodged firmly in place. I threw my back out trying to dislodge the broken cartridge.

Finally, I gave up and called a plumber. Since it was a simple fix (and I had done most of the work already) they were able to get me fixed up in no time. I asked lots of questions – hey I still had to pay the whole fee! – about future repairs. I learned a lot and even picked up a tip on removing the seat valve from a sink faucet.

CNC Lathe

A CNC lathe – Computer Numerical Controlled lathe – is designed to use a modern carbide tooling process. Computer menu style interface is used to control the machine. Operators of a CNC lathe need a high level of knowledge regarding the machine in order to set and operate the CNC.

Design of a CNC lathe can vary depending on the manufacturer’s needs. That being said, all CNC lathes have common elements. For example, the turret always holds and indexes the tool holders. The spindle will always hold the workpiece and slides always move the turret.

Clean-Out-of-Place Tank

When I was first approached by an employee about purchasing a new COP tank, I wasn’t sure what she meant. I did a bit of research and found out that COP stands for Clean-Out-of-Place. Frequently, COP immersion washers are used by pharmaceutical and biotech processing facilities.

A COP immersion tank is really a washer with a turbulent circulation system. Techs place dirty parts into the tank and the currents thoroughly wash the interior and exterior of the parts. COP tanks are especially useful for cleaning small parts where human hands might not fit for a thorough scrubbing.

Testing a Water Line Check Valve

A check valve may be installed in a house water line in order to regulate water entering and exiting. Though a check valve in a water line requires little external interference, it is important to test the check valve every now and then to ensure the correct water pressure is entering the home. To test the check valve, begin by opening the high-side and low-side bypass valves. Then attach the high-side hose on the test kit to the fitting, which is usually to the left side of the check valve.

The low-side of the hose from the test kit should be attached to the testcock to the right of check valve. Turn off the first shut-off valve (connected to the water line) and then slowly open the testcocks to which the hoses are attached. Open the high-side bleed valve and then close the low-side bleed valve. Read the PSI on the test kit to see if the water pressure is where it needs to be.

Troubleshooting Baldor Motor

Similar to a car, a Baldor motor should be checked every three months or every 500 hours, whichever comes first. If you notice any problems, then check the Baldor website. They’ve compiled a handy chart of common problems and their solutions. For example, a strange noise may be caused by material trapped in the air gap or ventilation opening.

Baldor motors are particularly vulnerable to high ambient temperatures, as well as dirty working conditions. Be sure to check the maximum operating temperature and duty cycle of each Baldor motor. This information is usually found on the motor’s name plate.
